Iceland Photography Workshop Expectations

The first time I went to Iceland I immediately fell in love with the spectacular landscapes and the amazing quality of light during the midnight sun in summer. I expect you will too.

I’d love to share with you some of my favourite locations during this 5 day Iceland photography workshop where I’ll be happy to teach you how to capture beautiful images of this strange and wonderful country.

We’ll be shooting in some truly awe-inspiring landscapes that have the potential to not only give you some portfolio-worthy images but also memories that will last a lifetime. We’ll also enjoy some meals and beverages together where I’d be delighted to critique your images over a beer and a burger while we refuel for our next landscape photography adventure.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or an advanced photographer, this Iceland Photography Workshop should give you some amazing images to take home and you’ll have lots of fun with a small group of passionate photographers.

Learn My Photography Secrets

In truth, there are no photography secrets when you join a Fototripper workshop. As your instructor I’m more than happy to divulge every bit of knowledge that I have to help you become a better artists and photographer. I’ll answer all of your questions and walk you through each technique that I use to create amazing landscape photographs. I limit this workshop to a maximum of just 10 people so that every student gets ample one-on-one time.

Itinerary

Your Arrival and Pre-Workshop Meetup – June 28th in Vík, Iceland

• You get yourself to Vík, Iceland
• Meet us for a group dinner with informal introductions and sharing of stories on June 28th
• Prepare our Camera bags, clean lenses, charge batteries, format cards

The Next 5 Days

Starting on June 29th and for the next five days we’ll be touring around Southern Iceland following the dynamic weather and chasing the best of the light. This might take us as far West as the infamous Bruarfoss waterfall or as far East as Vestrahorn. For this workshop it’s best to keep a fluid itinerary based on the ever-changing weather. There are many beautiful shooting locations close to Vík but be ready to hit the road in our quest for the best conditions.

We’ll be visiting giant waterfalls, dramatic seascapes and moody mountains throughout the entire workshop and the itinerary is subject to change based on weather and other conditions at the time of the workshop.

This is a ‘self-drive‘ workshop where you are expected to have your own transportation to get you to and from each shoot. The workshop ends on the evening of July 3rd. I fly home on July 4th.

How it Works

It’s dead simple. You’re on a 5 day photography adventure with me (Gavin Hardcastle) and my wife Amanda. Our objective is to capture stunning images with our cameras while having as many chuckles as possible. If you want to deep dive into the technical aspects of landscape photography we can do that. If you just want some fun companions to hang out with while waiting for the light to pop we can do that too.

If you’ve ever watched a Fototripper video and wanted to be part of the experience of creating beautiful imagery while enjoying some lighthearted camaraderie and banter you know exactly what to expect.

One thing that will always be evident in any Fototripper workshop is the passion for finding the best shots possible and the sheer joy of capturing those shots.

Fitness Requirements

We won’t be doing any long hikes as most shooting locations are just short walks from the car parks or pullouts. We will however be spending hours outside, standing around and strolling at our shooting locations so a basic level of fitness and mobility is required.

If you can walk for 15 minutes and stand around for a couple of hours you’ll have no problem. Feel free to bring a camp chair if you need to chill out.

• Insurance – It is MANDATORY to insure yourself against physical injury. I also advise that you insure your photographic equipment. Tour leaders will not be responsible in the event of any personal injuries or damage to photographic gear as a result of an accident during the workshop.

WHAT TO BRING

Photography Equipment

• A digital camera. Don’t forget your memory cards and charger.
• A sturdy tripod, ideally with a ball head.
• Recommended: Wide angle lens, mid-range zoom, and super long zoom.
• Recommended: A polarizing filter.
• Recommended: A camera remote.
• Many spare batteries for your camera.
• Recommended: A camera rain cover. Even if the weather is bad, we’ll get some awesome shots.
• Waterproof boots with good grip for standing in rivers and beaches.
• Clothing for all weather conditions, this is Iceland. We may get sideways rain in summer.

Book Your Accommodation Now

I would recommend that you book your accommodation near Vík BEFORE you book your place on this workshop. The sooner you arrange your accommodation the better as availability is limited and the prices can be prohibitive if left to the last minute. You can book on Airbnb, Hotels.com, Booking.com, expedia.com and vrbo.com to name but a few resources.

It’s not ESSENTIAL that you stay in Vík as we’ll be doing lots of driving in the entire Southern part of Iceland but you’ll find it more central to be closer to Vík as we’ll most likely pass through there daily while we explore. I would advise staying at a place no further than 45 minutes from Vík to avoid unnecessary shuttling.

How To Get There

I use Icelandair.com to book my flights to Iceland.

You’ll want to fly into Reykjavík at least a day before our meetup. Pick up your rental car or camper from Reykjavík and make your way to Vík which is an easy 3 hour drive South East of Reykjavík.

Driving in Iceland is generally easy and relaxed during the times of day that we’ll be out shooting (even in summer). Icelanders drive on the right hand side of the road (like the USA and Canada) and if we’re out for sunset/sunrise there’ll be hardly any other cars on the road.
